Devaluation of the Crime Number – from complaint to convicted

A fraudster narrowly avoided jail for bogus car theft insurance claim CMA having stepped in to undertake the investigation.

A 43-year-old man who fraudulently claimed his BMW had been stolen and driven into a tree, to make a bogus insurance claim, has narrowly avoided jail.

Presenting to the police as a victim of keyless car theft, he was issued a crime number. He likely anticipated this was the end of his dealings with the constabulary; vehicle theft reports are generally quickly closed.

Armed with a police reference, he confidently approached his insurers for payment.

However, CMA profiling identified the claim as warranting further attention. Evidence was collated, packaged and presented to the Essex constabulary.

The concise submission was unequivocal; Essex police could not and did not ignore it. The insured was invited to attend a police station whereupon our facts were produced, followed by confession.

The insured appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court where he admitted to ‘fraud by false representation’.

Police constabularies – we are here to assist, content to share our methodology.  Please help us to help you (and genuine victims) – appropriate cooperation & disclosure can and should occur effortlessly.

The vehicle concerned was a 2015 BMW 2 series, valued at about £15,000.  The insured retained the salvage.  A new V5C was issued after the DoL likely to the post-lost new keeper. However, both MoT & VEL have expired.  We will monitor the VRM, as we do with 1,000’s of others.

The insured has a further vehicle, likely used in his scaffolding work. However, whilst on a ‘personal’ or ‘cherished’ (non-agre related) plate, this too has a post-DoL keeper change.  We will monitor this also.
